While four members of the Cardinal men's tennis team were competing at the Polo Ralph Lauren Men's All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Stanford sent the remainder of the team to compete in the Bronco Classic in Santa Clara October 7-9.
In a tournament that included 12 teams and over 80 participants, Stanford represented itself very well as Phil Kao won the 'A' flight singles competition, beating teammate Blake Muller in the finals, and two Cardinal doubles teams won the consolation round in their bracket.
Kao, a sophomore from Cupertino, Calif., also teamed with Jeff Zeller to win the 'B' consolation doubles tournament. In singles, however, Kao moved to the finals where he was matched up against Muller, a freshman from Santa Barbara. Kao defeated Muller 6-4, 6-3 for the title.
In their doubles victory, Kao and Zeller beat a team from U.C. Davis in the finals of the 'B' consolation round.
Muller, playing in his first tournament as a collegian, was impressive as he moved through the 'A' singles bracket with three wins before facing Kao in the finals. Muller teamed with junior Eric McKean to win the 'A' consolation doubles bracket with an 8-6 win over a team from St. Mary's.
Ken Kao advanced to the semifinals in the 'C' singles bracket before losing to top-seeded Tommy Hicks of Santa Clara 6-2, 6-2.
Freshman Jeff Zellar worked his way to the finals of the 'C' consolation round before losing to Justin Garcia of UC Davis 7-6 (10), 6-4.
