Cal Men Fifth, Women Sixth at Chile Pepper Festival

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The California men's cross country team placed fifth with 176 points, while the Cal women finished sixth with 279 points Saturday at the national-caliber Chile Pepper Festival at the Agri Park Cross Country Course.

Arkansas claimed the men's title with 57 points, and Arizona was second with 97. On the women's side, Oklahoma State took top honors with 64 points, and the host Razorbacks were second with 71.

Senior Giliat Ghebray led Cal on the 10K course, placing 24th in a time of 29:51.3. Freshman Mark Matusak crossed the finish line next for the Bears in 45th (30:40.3). Ghebray also paced the Bears with a first-place finish at the Aggie Open Sept. 10. It's the third time this year that Ghebray and Matusak were Cal's top two runners.

Also scoring for Cal were freshman Yosef Ghebray (47th, 30:41.9), senior Kevin Davis (50th, 30:54.7) and freshman Jake Schmitt (52nd, 30:55.8).

Arkansas' Josphat Boit won the men's race in 28:27.6, just ahead of Abilene Christian's Nicodemus Naimadu (28:31.0).

Cal redshirt junior Bridget Duffy led her team with a 41st-place showing (21:55.7) on the 6K course. This is the third time this season the All-American has paced the Bears. Sophomore Rebecca Yau (46th, 21:59.6) and redshirt freshman Alysia Johnson (49th, 22:08.6) were close behind Duffy with solid results. Senior Abby Parker and junior Brooke Wells finished 79th (22:39.4) and 96th (22:59.0), respectively.

Miriam Kaumba, who was competing unattached, claimed the women's crown in 19:36.5, while Wichita State's Desiraye Osborn was second in 20:17.9.

The next major competition for Cal is the Pac-10 Championships Saturday, Oct. 29 in Tucson, Ariz.
