Stanford Defeats Arizona, 20-16
Oct. 15, 2005
TUCSON, Ariz. - Trent Edwards threw two touchdown passes and Stanford took advantage of five Arizona turnovers to beat the Wildcats 20-16 on Saturday.
It was the second Pac-10 road win in a row for the Cardinal (3-2, 2-1), who beat Washington State last week.
Stanford managed just 195 total yards, but the Wildcats' tough defense was offset by Arizona's offensive blunders.
Arizona (1-5, 0-3) lost its fourth in a row. Its only victory was against NCAA Division I-AA Northern Arizona.
But the wealth of Wildcat miscues led to great field position resulting in 13 Stanford points. Meanwhile, the Cardinal did not turn the ball over.
Arizona took the opening kickoff and went 80 yards in 15 plays in just over six minutes. Gilbert Harris' 1e-yard TD run capped the drive.
In the second quarter, though, the Wildcats' Richard Kovalcheck threw an interception and the Wildcats lost two fumbles. His first fumble set up Michael Sgroi's 37-yard field goal that cut the lead to 7-3.
Eight minutes later, Edwards found Anthony Kimble for a 10-yard touchdown pass with 3:34 left in the half and Stanford led 10-7.
The Cardinal made it 17-7, going 80 yards after the second-half kickoff. Edwards threw 10 yards to Michael Horgan for the touchdown.
Arizona sliced the deficit 17-14 when Mike Bell ran 5 yards for a score with 5:51 left in the third quarter. Kovalcheck's 21-yard pass to Stephen Steptoe set up the touchdown.
But Kovalcheck's second fumble came at Arizona's 23, and Sgroi's 34-yard field goal put Stanford ahead 20-14.
Arizona advanced to the Stanford 34 late in the game, but a penalty pushed the Wildcats back and, on fourth-and-28, Brandon Harrison intercepted Kovalcheck's fourth-and-28 pass.
Stanford punter Jay Ottovigio ran out of the end zone for an intentional safety with 17 seconds to play.
Edwards completed 16 of 36 for 137 yards. Kovalcheck was 20 of 38 for 161 and was sacked three times. Stanford is 2-1 since its embarrassing home loss to Division I-AA Cal-Davis.
