Huskies Earn National Recognition
Oct. 17, 2005
SEATTLE - Washington men's soccer players Ty Harden and Chris Eylander earned national recognition, Monday, for their efforts in last weekend's back-to-back road victories over Stanford and then-No. 13 California. Harden, a junior defender, was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week and Eylander, a senior goalkeeper, was named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week.
Both Harden (Junction City, Ore.) and Eylander (Sumner, Wash.) played crucial roles in Washington's shutout wins versus their Bay Area rivals. The UW defense held Stanford to just five shots, with Eylander making two saves. The Huskies handed Cal its first home loss and shut down an offense that had registered 22 goals in 12 matches prior to Sunday. Eylander also grabbed two saves, while the UW backline held the Golden Bears to seven shots.
Due in large part to the play of Harden and Eylander, the Huskies have posted three straight shutouts - also including a 0-0 double overtime draw with San Diego State, Oct. 9. UW has allowed just two goals in five Pac-10 matches at the halfway point of conference play.
With six shutouts on the season, Eylander is now one shutout shy of tying for third on the Washington career list (17).
The Huskies (8-3-1, 2-2-1) will begin the second-half of Pac-10 play hosting California (9-3-1, 2-3-0), Friday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. and Stanford (3-8-2, 0-4-1), Sunday, Oct. 23, at 1 p.m.
