Bears to Compete at ITA Regional Qualifier

BERKELEY - WHAT'S ON TAP: As the busy fall season keeps rolling, Cal travels to Stanford this weekend for the ITA Regional Qualifier. Matches will kick off on Friday, Oct. 21 and continue through Monday, Oct. 24, taking place all day.
CAL IN THE TOURNAMENT: All members of the California women's tennis team will be competing at the ITA Regional Qualifier this weekend. The winner and runner up qualify for the ITA National Indoors, which will be held Nov. 2-6 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Cal's Suzi Babos has already qualified for the Indoors because of her results at the All-American Main Draw and high ranking.
ON THE DOUBLES COURT: At the ITA Regional Qualifier, the doubles teams will be as follows: sophomore Cristina Visico will be teaming up with senior Jessica Shu, Marion Ravelojaona will pair up with Bojana Bobusic and Stephanie Kusano will pair up with Claire Ilcinkas.
BEARS AT THE SAINT MARY'S INVITATIONAL: Last weekend, No. 2 seeded freshman Bojana Bobusic, defeated Robin Guier of the University of California Davis, 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals of singles play, before falling to No. 1 Pavla Mesterova of Loyola Marymount, 6-2, 6-3 in the finals. On the doubles court, Bobusic teamed up with freshman Claire Ilcinkas to defeat Guier and Ally Muller, 8-4, in the semifinals. First seeded Bobusic and Ilcinkas were then outlasted by No. 2 seeded Mesterova and Tamara Tanner of Loyola Marymount, 9-8.
BROGAN'S LEGACY: In her 25 years at Cal, Jan Brogan has molded the Golden Bear program into one of the best in the country, guiding the Bears to 23 NCAA appearances and 18 Top-10 finishes since 1982. She currently boasts a 501-204 (.710) dual match record, making her the fourth winningest coach in University of California history and top active female Division I tennis coach. Her continued dedication to excellence earned her the Wilson/ITA National Coach of the Year award in 1990, in addition to ITA Northwest Region Coach of the Year honors in 1988, 1991 and 1993.
NO. 2 Suzi Babos: Sophomore Suzi Babos enters the fall season with a No. 2 national ranking by the ITA. Babos, a native of Sopron, Hungary, advanced to the quarterfinals at the All-American Main Draw, before falling to USC's Amanda Fink, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. On the doubles court Babos teamed up with Zsuzsanna Fodor to defeat their opponents in the round of 16 at the All-American Main Draw, before falling in the quarterfinals to USD's Lauren Pearl and Emma Murphy, 8-2. Last season Babos was named the 2005 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and produced one of the most decorated seasons in Cal history. Babos ended the 2005 season with a 33-10 overall record, capturing the singles titles at both the Cal Nike Invitational and the ITA West Regional Championships.
