Jamie Hagiya Starts It Up: A Veteran's View Of The Early Goings Of The 2005-06 Trojans
Oct. 21, 2005
Hello to all my fellow Trojan family, friends, and fans,
I must start by asking, 'How GREAT does it feel to be a Trojan right now?' After last week's football game, I can't imagine wanting to be anywhere else but SC!!! That was so exciting and fun to watch, and you know what else will be just as thrilling... that's right, the women's basketball team. The time has come... and USC women's basketball is back into action, YEA!!! As of right now we have begun preparing for our long journey towards March Madness. Oh, that reminds me, thank you so much for all your support and compliments on last season, especially when we made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
We just completed our fifth practice, and from day one, the gym has been full of positive energy, enthusiasm and, of course, lots of hard work. Everyone, and I mean everyone, looks very much improved and ready for this season. So far the majority of our practices have been focused on our defense, and gradually we have been learning the basics of our offense. It is crazy to think that our first game is now only 11 days away, but we will definitely be prepared thanks to our coaches; our new addition in the post, Nadia Parker; a new face to the program Kristen Travers; and 10 older, stronger, and more experienced returners from last season.
Shay Murphy, also known as my 'sister,' has worked endlessly to prepare for this season, and I guarantee she is ready to compete against the best in the nation. Meghan Gnekow has come back for her fourth and final year, and the only word to describe Meghan as a player is 'amazing.' I just kind of stand there and watch her in awe. Allie J. will be a solid part of our team, bringing tenacity and lots of aggressiveness. She's a beast on the boards... watch out for her. Chloe will be our go-to player in the post, and she is ready to lead our team after working hard all summer. Her post moves are amazing and her jump shot is beautiful. Kish is also another one that has been looking really good in practice; I think that she'd give Allie a run for her money on the boards. I mean, her vertical is only like 30 inches or something like that. Then you have Camille, who is a freakin' genius with the ball, or 'wiz' -- whatever you prefer. Some things that she does just leave you kind of speechless. I am very proud of Nadia, who has been working hard every day and will be really fun to watch this year. Kristen is a walk-on, and we are all really excited that she is a part of our team. And wait 'til you see her shoot the ball!
The next three have not practiced yet, but when they come back our practices will be full of 12 threatening players. J Funn is a dynamic player who has so much depth to her game. By the way, if you didn't see her play in summer league, she killed! All I have to say about Simone is that she is ready. Her shooting is on point, and when she is on the floor, her presence is known. Our final player rounding out our roster is Brynn Cameron. Oh yes Brynnee, we do love her. She also has been working very hard, and besides the obvious that she is automatic from anywhere on the floor, she is a smart, skilled, big-time player who makes big-time plays.
Well, there you go, our 2005-06 team in a nutshell. I hope you are all just as excited about these upcoming months as we are! As of this afternoon we are off to Catalina Island for some team bonding. I'm sure there'll be plenty of stories to tell you once we come back, so until then, thanks again for your support. FIGHT ON!!!
