UW Men Fall To No. 12 Cal 2-0
Oct. 21, 2005
SEATTLE - Angel Quintero and Calen Carr scored a pair of goals, lifting No. 12 California to a 2-0 victory over Washington in Pac-10 men's soccer action at Husky Soccer Field Friday evening.
The match marked the second consecutive meeting between these teams, the first meeting resulting in a 1-0 victory for Washington in Berkeley, Sunday. The Huskies, still winless in Pac-10 matches at home, had their two-game winning streak snapped. They fall to 8-4-1 overall and 2-3-1 in conference play. Cal improved to 10-3-1, 3-3-0 in the Pac-10.
The Golden Bears made their mark early, capitalizing on their third shot of the match. Pieter Berger served a cross from the left corner which was controlled by Quintero in front of the goal. From 10 yards out, Quintero blasted a shot past UW senior goalkeeper Chris Eylander at the 16:43 minute mark.
The 1-0 California lead remained through halftime, with the Huskies coming out firing after the intermission. The Washington offense had its opportunities in the second frame. Senior midfielder Leo Totev led UW with five shots, including a rocket that ricocheted off the right post inside 10 minutes remaining. Sophomore forward Ely Allen followed Totev's attempt with a shot of his own with 9:14 remaining.
UW was still hungry for the equalizer when momentum quickly changed. With just under four minutes left in the match, Carr beat two UW defenders inside the halfline and carried the ball on a breakaway. Eylander came out of the box but was beat by Carr who then had an open net and scored on a low shot past the left post at the 86:23 mark.
'We let our guard down a bit,' UW head coach Dean Wurzberger said. 'We were second to everything in the first half. We didn't dominate in any area, the back, the middle, or the front. They had control of us, they got outplayed man for man. They did more than we did and we couldn't recover. We played well, we chased the game in the second half. We tried to win it but we couldn't recover.'
Cal's second goal took the wind out of the Huskies' sails, who overall outshot Cal 19-15. Eylander made seven saves, while Cal keeper Erik Kronberg grabbed six.
The Huskies will look to get back in the win column on Sunday, hosting Stanford at 1 p.m. at Husky Soccer Field. Stanford defeated Oregon State, Friday, 3-2 in overtime.
