Cal Advances at ITA Regional Qualifier

STANFORD - The California women's tennis team defeated all but one of its opponents at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northwest Regional Qualifier Friday, to advance on the singles as well as doubles courts. Cal's Zsuzsanna Fodor, Cristina Visico and Stephanie Kusano enter this weekend's tournament, which is being held at Stanford, with a top seed.
The event features top players from Division I schools from the Northwest region. The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn a spots in the Nov. 3-6 ITA National Indoor Championships hosted by Ohio State University at the Racquet Club of Columbus.
In the singles round of 128, freshman Claire Ilcinkas defeated Nelly Dvornicka of Eastern Washington, 6-2, 6-2. Ilcinkas then went on to outlast Saskia Nauenberg of the University of Washington, 6-3, 6-0, in the round of 64.Senior Jessica Shu defeated her opponent in the round of 128, Claudia Hirt of Oregon, 6-2, 4-0 (Hirt suffered an injury), then went on to defeat Nancy Mok of the University of California Davis, 6-1, 6-1.
Fodor, who enters the tournament seeded No. 1, had a first round bye, then outlasted Rachel Berger of Eastern Washington, 6-1, 6-0, in the round of 64. No. 5 Cristina Visico also defeated her opponent in the round of 64, Robin Guier of Davis, 3-6, 7-6 (8), 6-3.
In more singles action, No. 6 seeded Stephanie Kusano earned a first round bye, then went on to outlast Pacific's Natalia Kostenko, 6-2, 7-5. Marion Ravelojaona, who is playing at the No. 12 spot, defeated Kar Jorlkagnova, 6-3, 6-0 in the round of 64. To wrap up the round of 64, Bojana Bobusic outlasted Mylene Martin of USF, 6-3, 6-0.
On the doubles court, Shu teamed up with Visico to defeat Ruman/ Tinnierelo of Idaho, 8-4, in the round of 64. The duo then went on to defeat UW's Svanfeldt/ Wong, 8-6, in the round of 32. Bobusic and Ravelojaona earned a first round bye, then outlasted Feline and Young of Saint Mary's, 8-0, in the round of 32. Ilcinkas and Kusano defeated Harms/ Popescu of San Jose State, 8-2, in the round of 64, then fell to Barnes and Knutson of Santa Clara, 8-3 in the round of 32.
The tournament continues through Monday, Oct. 24, with action taking place all day.
