Late Goal Lifts USC to 2-1 Win over UW Women
Oct. 23, 2005
LOS ANGELES - Rosa Anna Tantillo netted the decisive goal inside the final six minutes Sunday as USC dealt the Washington women's soccer team its sixth straight loss, a 2-1 decision at McAlister Field.
The Huskies dropped to 0-14-3 and 0-6 in Pac-10 play with their 10th one-goal loss of the season. The Trojans won their fifth consecutive home game, improving to 9-4-2 with a 3-1-1 Pac-10 record.
USC capitalized on a free kick from midfield to set up the only first-half score. Lindsay Parker sent the free kick to Tracy Lansing on the right flank. Lansing served a cross to Amy Rodriquez who headed the ball in at 17:12 for her team-leading sixth goal.
The teams went scoreless over the subsequent 62 minutes before UW sophomore Dani Bridges (Maple Valley, Wash./Tahoma HS) scored the equalizer. Freshman Sarah Dougherty (Boise, Idaho) crossed a pass into the box that Bridges booted in at 79:16 for her first goal of the season.
Bridges' goal halted a 534-minute scoreless drought for the Huskies' whose last score came Oct. 2 in a 2-2 tie against San Francisco. Prior to Sunday, the Huskies played five full games without a goal.
The excitement from UW's tying goal faded just over five minutes later when Tantillo notched the game-winner at 84:37. She collected a pass from Leah Gallegos and sent home a shot from 10 yards out, capping he Trojans' third straight win via a goal within the final six minutes.
UW junior goalkeeper Kelsey Rasmussen (Gig Harbor, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) registered six saves for the second game in a row. Veronica Simonton was credited with two saves for the Trojans who outshot the Huskies 12-4.
Washington closes out the season with a three-game homestand, beginning Friday, Oct. 28 against Oregon. Kick-off is 7 p.m. at Husky Soccer Field.
