Oct. 23, 2005
TEMPE, Ariz. - No. 10 California blanked Arizona State, 1-0, Sunday at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium to regain a share of the Pac-10 title. The Golden Bears improved to 11-2-2 overall (4-0-1 Pac-10), while the Sun Devils fell to 8-6-3 (3-2-1). With its sixth straight shutout, Cal is off to its best start through 15 games since 2000 (13-1-1).
Senior midfielder Sierra Schlesinger scored the game's only goal - her first of the season - in the 48th minute. A Cal corner kick was sent into the box and bounced around several times before sophomore midfielder Chioma Igwe shot the ball off the cross bar. The ball deflected to Schlesinger who converted her attempt.
Cal outshot ASU, 13-8, including 4-1 in shots on goal. Junior forward Julia Schnugg and junior midfielder Nadia Al-Lami led the Bears with three shots each. ASU goalkeeper Kim Bingham recorded three saves, while Cal's Ashley Sulprizio needed to make only one save.
Sulprizio, the current Pac-10 Player of the Week, has been credited with nine of Cal's 11 shutouts this season. The 1988 Bears set the school record with 14 shutouts.
Cal and No. 4 UCLA face each other Friday, Oct. 29 in Berkeley with identical 4-0-1 conference marks. Game time is 3:30 p.m. at Edwards Stadium. The Bruins (14-1-1) tied Washington State, 0-0, at home today.
