Quotes from Derek Hagan's Press Conference
Oct. 24, 2005
Tempe, Ariz. - On being on the big board for ESPN's mock NFL Draft:'I'm not thinking about any of that right now. I don't even care. My focus is on this team and what we are going to do with the rest of the season. This is my last year at ASU and I want to do whatever it takes to get this team back on track.'
On the problems with the team and difficulties in practice:'I think a lot of the players think that they can not do any preparation during the week and then just throw a switch on Saturday night and come out playing at full intensity. It's definitely been a problem on us lacking intensity at the beginning of games. We are coming out of the gate slowly and getting ourselves into holes early,'
On team chemistry and fan reaction:'I think that we're fine right now. Getting on the plane and coming off after the game, it felt like nobody was talking to each other, but all the seniors met together today to try and find out what we have to do to get this thing going again.
'We have to come out with full intensity for the Washington game. It is a game that a lot of people think that we are supposed to win, but that won't happen if we don't come out with the fire we need at the beginning of the game. We have to start at the get-go and be ready to play for 60 minutes.
'I haven't had much interaction with the fans, but I think that they will be angry if we lose this one, and I think that's a natural reaction. But most of them have been very supportive for the most part. They've been reminding us to keep our heads up. Getting off the tram yesterday outside the stadium, we saw a lot of Cardinal fans leaving the game and they all told us to lift our heads up and just keep our spirits up. They know that we are still a good football team and we know that we are still a good team. We just have to put it together and come out and show it. It starts with today's practice and how we prepare for the Washington game.'
On whether guys are ready for the game:'I look for what we do through the week, because it all starts in practice. They say that you practice like you are going to play and when we were practicing against Stanford and then earlier against Oregon, we really didn't practice very well and it showed because we didn't play well. The first five games we practiced well and obviously some of the games didn't turn out the way we wanted them to be. Some guys are just out there not making silly mistakes, not having the mental breakdowns in practice that can bleed over to the game.
