Volleyball Returns Home To Face Washington And Washington State
Oct. 25, 2005
The Arizona State Sun Devils (6-13 overall, 1-8 Pac-10) begin the second half of the Pac-10 season this week hosting Washington State (8-14, 1-8 Pac-10) and No. 2 Washington (18-0, 9-0 Pac-10) at Wells Fargo Arena. The Sun Devils will take on the Cougars Thursday at 7 p.m. and the Huskies Friday at 7 p.m. to kickoff Homecoming weekend festivities. The Devils are in the midst of season-high eight-match losing streak and have faced a ranked team in six of the last seven matches. The schedule does not get any easier as ASU will face ranked opponents in six of its next seven matches. Following this week's action against the Washington schools, ASU returns to the road to face rival Arizona (Nov. 4), Stanford (Nov. 11) and California (Nov. 12). ASU ends the season with five of its last seven matches on the road.
Lights, Camera, Action:
All of ASU's home matches will be available through a fee-based webcast at www.sundevilsportsnetwork.com. Fans can also follow all of ASU's home matches, and most road matches, via the free statistical GameTracker at www.thesundevils.com.
Looking To Avoid History:
ASU's current eight-match losing streak is the second longest in school history and one shy of a school-record nine-match streak endured in 1996. The 1996 squad (9-15 overall, 4-14 Pac-10) finished the season losing 10 of its final 11 matches, including a string of nine straight Pac-10 matches. ASU's current eight-match skid started with a five-game loss to Oregon State at home Sept. 24.
Recapping Last Weekend:
The Sun Devils fought hard despite dropping a pair of matches to nationally ranked USC (3-0) and UCLA (3-1) last weekend in Los Angeles. Junior outside hitter Nicole Morton led the Sun Devils averaging 4.57 kpg over the two matches, including tying a season high with 17 kills against the Women of Troy. Sophomore libero Sydney Donahue returned to the starting lineup and averaged 7.14 digs per game. The match vs. the Bruins featured four Devils with double-digits in kills and a four-game loss that included 38 total tie scores and 12 lead changes.
Series History vs. Washington State:
Following Washington State's 3-1 victory earlier this season, the Sun Devils and Cougars are now tied 20-20 in the all-time series. WSU defeated ASU in four games (28-30, 30-28, 32-30, 30-16) in Pullman on Oct. 1. Last season, the Sun Devils swept the Cougs, winning in straight sets in Pullman (11/11) and in five games in Tempe (10/16).
Series History vs. Washington:
The Sun Devils are 18-25 all-time against Washington and have lost six straight to the Huskies dating back to the 2002 season. The Huskies are off to a perfect 18-0 start this season and have won all but two of its 18 matches with three-game sweeps.
Donahue Digs and Serves Her Name Into The Record Books:
Sophomore libero Sydney Donahue ranks second in the Pac-10 averaging 6.01 digs per game has recorded the second, fourth, sixth and 10th-best dig performances in ASU history through the first 19 matches this season. She recorded 43 digs in ASU's five-game loss to Notre Dame on Sept. 4, nearly eclipsing the 17-year-old school record of 44 digs set by Christy Nore in 1988. In addition to being the second most digs in single-match school history, Donahue's stellar defensive performance established an ASU rally-scoring record (previous was 30), tied for fourth most in Pac-10 history and are the fifth-most by any player in the country this season. Donahue also recorded 34 digs against Texas State (9/10) to tie for the fourth most digs in school history and 33 digs against Washington State (10/1) to tie for sixth. Donahue also etched her name in the record books when she recorded seven aces against Oregon State (9/24), tying the ASU rally-scoring record and ranking third in the ASU single-match record book. In 19 matches this season, Donahue has recorded double-digits in digs in all but three matches and has 10 matches with 20 or more digs. She has recorded 784 digs in her ASU career (5.09 per game average).
