Oregon Posts First Ever Win over UW in Soccer
Oct. 28, 2005
SEATTLE - Nicole Garbin slipped a shot just inside the post in the 36th minute for the only goal Friday as Oregon dealt the Washington women their seventh straight loss, a 1-0 decision at Husky Soccer Field.
The Huskies dropped to 0-15-3 and 0-7 in Pac-10 play with their 11th one-goal loss of the season. It was the eighth time an opponent defeated Washington by a 1-0 score.
Oregon collected its first series victory in 10 all-time meetings with the Huskies. The Ducks' season record improved to 9-6-1 overall with a 1-5 Pac-10 mark.
The Ducks were led by first-year coach Tara Erickson (Bilanski) a former midfield standout at UW from 1992-95 who served as an assistant on the Husky coaching staff from 1996-98.
Garbin netted the game winner at 35:23 with her team-leading 10th goal. Katie Abrahamson headed the ball toward the feet of Garbin who was at the top of the box with her back to the goal. Garbin spun to her right and fired a low 17-yard shot to the left side of the goal, past the diving UW goalkeeper Kelsey Rasmussen.
That was the only dangerous chance for the Ducks who staved off several strong second-half scoring opportunities by UW. Husky freshman Tara Hodgson (Franklin, Tenn.) narrowly missed on back-to-back attempts in the 71st minute. Her first shot, an 18-yard boot, was deflected right back to her by UO goalkeeper Jessie Chatfield. Hodgson followed with a 12-yard shot that caromed off the top of the crossbar.
Chatfield made four brilliant saves in the second half. She was credited with nine saves for the game en route to her seventh shutout.
Rasmussen (Gig Harbor, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) had two saves for the Huskies who outshot Oregon by a 15-10 margin.
Washington hosts Oregon State on Sunday at noon before closing out the season at home on Friday at 5 p.m. against Washington State.
