UCLA Men's Soccer Team Records 11th Shutout In 1-0 Win Over Oregon State
Oct. 28, 2005
Los Angeles, Calif. - A goal at 75:56 by UCLA sophomore forward Kamani Hill broke a 0-0 deadlock and gave the Bruins their 11th shutout of the season in a 1-0 victory over Oregon State. The win improved UCLA's record to 9-3-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the conference, while the Beavers dropped to 8-6-4, 4-4-0 in the Pac-10. By virtue of the four wins and one tie, UCLA moves into first place in the Pac-10 with 13 points. Oregon State and Cal drop to second with 12 points.
The game was a fast-paced, back-and-forth affair, with UCLA tallying nine shots to Oregon State's 10. The Beavers set the pace early with three shots on goal in the first 30 minutes. Reed made a save on a Collin Foster shot in the ninth minute, then stopped an angled shot by Robbie Findley in the 22nd minute on a breakaway. Reed also saved a header from Lucas Egenwall in the 30th minute. The Bruins had a pair of close-range opportunities in the 40th and 41st minutes, but shots by Jonathan Bornstein and Maxwell Griffin went just wide.
UCLA stepped up the pressure in the second half. After a Beaver giveaway in the 51st minute, Oregon goalkeeper Packy Deenihan made a point-blank save on a Bornstein shot in front of the goal. Bruin midfielder Greg Folk had an opportunity with Deenihan out of his box in the 54th minute, but the goalkeeper made the stop on Folk's shot.
The Bruins broke through at 75:56 when Griffin sent a pass to Mike Zaher on the left side. Zaher crossed it to Hill at the top of the box, where the sophomore forward powered the ball into the back of the net past Oregon State keeper Packy Deenihan for his fourth goal of the season.
Reed made five saves in the match and earned his ninth solo shutout of the season (UCLA's 11th overall). The Bruins have yet to allow a goal at home in 2005, a streak of 650 shutout minutes on Frank W. Marshall Field. Overall, UCLA has a shutout streak of four games and 480 minutes.
