Oct. 28, 2005
PULLMAN, Wash. - The Cougars outlasted Oregon State (9-6-1, 2-3-1 Pac-10) in a hard fought match Friday as Washington State posted a 1-0 win over the Beavers. WSU moves to 9-7-2 overall and 2-4-1 in conference play.
'It's obviously a very good win,' said WSU Head Soccer Coach Matt Potter. 'It keeps our dream alive. It was a tough one because both teams are very similar. We match-up very similar and have similar dangers. We are excited to come out in the right side of a 1-0 win. It's a credit to the way we played today.'
Oregon State came out strong, out shooting the Cougars 5-2 in the first half. The Beavers best chance came in the 17th minute when Stacey Mescher got behind the Cougar defense and fired a hard struck ball at WSU keeper Katie Hultin.
Washington State came alive in the second half pressuring the Oregon State defense and keeping the ball in the OSU half. The Cougars' efforts paid off in the 77th minute when Sasha Baines got her head on a Carmen Anderson corner kick and knocked in the game winner to put WSU ahead 1-0.
'I just had a perfect ball from Carmen,' Baines said of her goal. 'I really didn't have much thought. I just went up for it and it went in. It's exciting. We worked all week in practice on specific things and we finished today like we needed to. Now we have two more big games and we know they are must win games for us. We just have to work hard as a team and I know we can get it done.'
Washington State was out shot 8-7 with Anderson leading the Cougar offense with three shots. Hultin made three saves in the match, picking up the 19th shutout of her career and earning the top spot on the Cougar career shutout list. OSU keeper Melissa Onstad had two stops in the match.
The Cougars play their final home match of the season Sunday, Oct 30. facing Oregon at noon at Lower Soccer Field.
