Cougar Crews Successful at Head of the Snake
Oct. 29, 2005
PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State's women's crews defeated the Gonzaga Bulldogs Saturday, Oct. 29 at the Head of the Snake on Wawawai Landing.
In the first race of the day, WSU's varsity eight and second varsity eight were just six seconds apart, clocking in at 17:16.00 and 17:22.78, respectively. Both posted faster times than Gonzaga's varsity eight, which finished the 5,000m race in 18:13.99.
Race officials shortened the second flight, and split it into two groups due to windy weather conditions. The varsity boats in the second flight rowed 3,500m, while the novices stroked over 2,500m of the Snake River.
'The conditions were the same for all the boats,' head coach Jane LaRiviere said. 'They had to do some good rowing to get through the water. It was tricky, but it was tricky for everyone.'
In the second flight, Cougar crews were again successful. The WSU third varsity eight took first on the abridged course with a time of 11:13.53, while the fourth Cougar grouping finished in 11:27.97. Gonzaga's second varsity eight completed the course in 11:50.78.
The Cougars will take a weekend off before hitting competing Sunday, Nov. 14 at the Head of the Lake. WSU will compete against host school Washington, Yale, Stanford, Syracuse, Duke and others on the Montlake Cut in Seattle.
