PULLMAN, Wash. - Thirteen was a lucky number for the Washington State women's basketball team this Halloween.
Propelled by a pair of 13-0 runs, the Cougars defeated Baden Sports 73-58 in an exhibition game Monday at Friel Court.
Junior Adriane Ferguson (Spokane, Wash.) led a quartet of Cougars who scored in double figures with 19 points. In addition, freshman Katie Appleton (14 points), junior Kate Benz (13 points) and senior Charmaine Jones (11 points) also reached double-digits in points.
WSU opened the game by scoring 13 straight points. After missing their initial field goal attempt, the Cougars made five consecutive shots in the run, which was capped by a 3-pointer from Benz.
'I told the kids that the game starts when we head out of the tunnel,' WSU Head Coach Sherri Murrell said. 'It is vital and important for us to have that focus when we leave the tunnel.'
WSU built as much as a 19-point lead in the first half before heading into halftime with a 34-21 advantage. In the second half, Baden Sports managed to shave its deficit to as little as eight at 48-40 with 11:11 remaining.
However, the Cougars thwarted Baden Sports with their second run of 13 unanswered points to open their largest lead of the game at 61-40 with 7:46 remaining. The Cougars' lead did not fall below double figures the rest of the way.
'At halftime I said the score was 0-0,' Murrell said. 'We just kept attacking. That is the one thing I kept telling the kids is to attack.'
The Cougars play their second and final exhibition game Friday, Nov. 11 versus Lewis-Clark State at Bohler Gym at 7 p.m.
