USC Posts Solid 76-63 Win In Exhibition Play Against Vanguard
Oct. 31, 2005
LOS ANGELES -- The USC women's basketball team put it all together in the second half against Vanguard to lock down a 76-63 victory in the Trojans' first exhibition game of the 2005-06 season. The showdown against the Lions was an opportunity for the Women of Troy to test out their returning talent pool for the coming season, and even with a few players sidelined by injuries, USC got eight players in the scoring column and had four finish in double figures in Monday night's win at the Lyon Center.
Junior center Chloe Kerr (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS) led the Women of Troy in scoring with 15 points, 11 of which came in the second half. The Trojans barreled out to an early lead and held a 10-point edge midway through the first half, but Vanguard managed to eat away at that advantage and made it a one-point game for halftime thanks in large part to 13 points from Kelly Schmidt and 10 from Rachel Besse by the halftime buzzer.
To open the second half, the Lions stepped ahead early on a score in the paint by Besse, which gave Vanguard its first -- and last -- lead of the game at 29-28. Kerr scored the next five points for the Women of Troy to help spark a tunraround in the game. Five more Trojans got in on the scoring frenzy soon after, and a pair of buckets from Eshaya Murphy (Van Nuys, Calif./Montclair Prep HS) pushed USC to its largest lead of the game at 55-39. The Lions worked to stay in step with the Trojans, but the depth of the Women of Troy proved too much. By the final buzzer, seven Trojans had scored in the half, and all had scored at least two baskets in the game.
Besides Kerr's team-high 15 points, Murphy added 13, and Allison Jaskowiak (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway West HS) and Markisha Lea (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King HS) had 10 apiece to lead the Women of Troy to victory. Vanguard's Schmidt led all scorers with 24 points on a 13-of-13 effort from the free-throw line, and Besse also hit the 20-point marker with 22 on the night. Jessica Richter also added double figures for the Lions with 10 points.
USC returns to action next week in an exhibition game against Team Concept on Monday (Nov. 7) at 7 p.m. at the Lyon Center.
