PULLMAN, Wash. -- The California Golden Bears volleyball team, ranked 18th nationally, came from a two-game deficit to defeat Washington State 23-30, 27-30, 30-12, 30-19, 15-10 Thursday night at Bohler Gym.
California (15-6, 8-4) had four players in double-figure kills led by Angie Pressey's 20 kills. Alicia Powers had a team-high eight blocks while Jillian Davis had 24 digs. Samantha Carter had 59 assists. Powers and Jenna Brown both had a trio of service aces.
Jen Barcus' 15 kills led Washington State (8-17, 1-11) while Brittany Johnson and Kelly Rosin each added 10 kills. Te'Ara Epps had a match-high 11 blocks as the Cougars out-blocked the Golden Bears 21 to 13.5 for the match. Setter Maureen Perez had 47 assists and Jalen Pendon had 12 digs.
WSU won the first two games and kept Cal at hitting percentages of .105 and .062. But the Bears came roaring back after the break and captured the third, fourth and fifth games in deciding fashion with hitting percentages at .393, .389 and .500.
'I think that since we were up two-zero we expected them to just roll over and die. Just give it to us instead of us earning it,' Barcus said. 'Being able to handle situations like that comes with maturity. It's disappointing because we had a big opportunity and let it slip through our hands.'
Washington State hosts No. 4 Stanford (20-4, 9-3) Friday night at Bohler Gym.
