No. 18 Cal Volleyball Falls to No. 2 Washington, 3-2
Nov. 4, 2005
SEATTLE, WASH. - Behind 16 kills from senior Jenna Brown and sophomore Angie Pressey, the No. 18-ranked California women's volleyball team (15-7, 8-5) gave undefeated and No. 2-ranked Washington (8-17, 1-11) a scare in Seattle, before finally yielding, 3-2 (30-24, 25-30, 30-25, 27-30, 15-7), Friday night at Bank of America Arena. The Golden Bears pushed the Huskies to only their third five-game match of the season, and it was the second time this year Cal had forced Washington to the limit as the Bears had lost to the Huskies, 3-2, on Oct. 7 at Haas Pavilion. The Bears were able to win games two (30-25) and four (30-27), before falling behind early in game five and losing 15-7.
Brown was spectacular for Cal, registering 16 kills with no errors in 32 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage. She also added 16 digs, while Pressey had a career-high five solo blocks and 15 digs to go with her 16 kills. Freshman Morgan Beck chipped in 14 kills, and senior Alicia Powers and sophomore Ellen Orchard had 10 kills apiece. Orchard also had a career-high 10 total blocks (three solo, seven block assists). Junior libero Jillian Davis led the Bears with 17 digs and junior setter Samantha Carter finished with 54 assists.
Christal Morrison and Sanja Tomasevic paced Washington with 24 and 23 kills, respectively. Setter Courtney Thompson had a match-high 71 assists on the evening.
The Bears will next host the only other team to take Washington to five games this season - No. 8-ranked Arizona (17-4, 9-3). Cal entertains the Wildcats on Thursday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. at Haas Pavilion; and then hosts Arizona State, Friday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. at Haas Pavilion.
