No. 9 Cal Shuts Out Oregon, 5-0

Nov. 4, 2005

EUGENE, Ore. - Five different players scored as No. 9 California blanked Oregon, 5-0, Friday night at Pape' Field. The Golden Bears improved to 13-3-2 overall and remained in the hunt for the Pac-10 title with a 6-1-1 mark. Oregon dropped to 9-8-1 overall and 1-7 in conference play. The temperature at game time was 47 degrees and rain, sometimes heavy, fell throughout the contest.

Senior forward Liz Eisenberg gave Cal an early 1-0 lead with a goal in the fourth minute. Eisenberg received a pass from sophomore midfielder Chioma Igwe and tallied her team-best eighth goal of 2005 and what later proved to be her fifth game winner.

Freshman forward Valerie Barnes netted her first career goal in the 30th minute, with senior defender Tracy Hamm being credited with the assist.

Cal, which began the day in second in the Pac-10, entered the half ahead, 2-0, but each team had launched seven shots. However, Cal ended the game with a 24-10 shot advantage.

Junior forward Julia Schnugg extended the Bears lead to 3-0 with her first goal in a Cal uniform in the 49th minute. She dribbled towards goal from near midfield and beat goalkeeper Jessie Chatfield. Schnugg was a second team All-ACC choice at Florida State in 2004 before transferring to Cal.

Schungg notched her third assist with the Bears in the 54th minute when she fed senior forward Dania Cabello for an easy tap in after Cabello had initially passed her the ball. The goal was Cabello's fifth of the year.

Freshman forward Katherine Daiss became the third Cal player to post her first career goal on the night in the 80th minute. Daiss knocked in sophomore midfielder Laurie Gartrell's shot that got away from the keeper.

Chatfield recorded 12 saves for Oregon. Senior Ashley Sulprizio and junior Anna Key teamed in goal to help Cal post its 12th shutout of the year. Sulprizio secured three saves, and Key made one.

The Bears wrap up the regular season at Oregon State Nov. 6 at 11 a.m. Cal will be without starting central defender Kristine Relja for the game due to the red card she received in the 60th minute against the Ducks. Oregon's Sabrina DeMonte also was handed a red card at the same time.
