Quotes from Dirk Koetter's Monday Press Conference

Nov. 7, 2005

Tempe, Ariz. - Opening Statement... 'We were right on the verge of breaking the game wide open. Our guys really pulled through. I was really proud of them when they hung in during the fourth quarter. Momentum shifted at the end of the third quarter, but at 6:00 to go in the fourth quarter we really turned it around, made plays on both sides of the ball and held on to the victory. I'm very proud of our guys.

We gave game balls to Zach Miller on offense. He had a great game, not only catching the ball, but on blocking as well. He is one of the better blocking tight ends. Jordan Hill received a game ball on Defense. Jordan and Kyle Caldwell played great on defense. Chad Lindsey, the freshman linebacker, who plays on a bunch of special teams, received a game ball as well.

We are excited for the UCLA game. We know what's on the line. Our guys are looking forward to this game. We have many guys from southern California. UCLA is a good team and has won a lot of games that could have gone either way. Right now we are most concerned with our health status, but we are planning on having some of our players back including: Quency Darley, Jamaal Lewis, Moey Mutz, and hopefully Grayling Love and Stephen Berg, but we'll see how the rest of the week goes.'

On Rudy Carpenter's decision making...'Over all Rudy has played outstanding. At times Rudy shows plays that are way above his experience level. He is good at throwing the ball away when the play is not there. When you have a quarterback that shows he can do that, you want him to do that all the time [when the play is not there]. Rudy is doing some things great, but there is room for improvement. He has been running around a little bit more. Overall I'm very pleased with Rudy.'

On Maurice Drew...'He is a terrific all around player. He has great hands and a huge rushing game. He can break tackles and has great speed. He is a talented player that every one in the country tried to recruit.'

On having many players from southern California...'At one point or another, many kids from California grow up thinking they're going to play for USC or UCLA but for one reason or another they change their mind. Whether they weren't recruited or they liked another school better. With the way our schedule works before the game, there isn't a lot of time to be distracted. I know our players will be excited because they'll have a lot of family and friends going to the game and I think that's great.'

On Terry Richardson...'Terry's confidence is high. I think it will be a great return match up between Terry and Maurice Drew.'

On Drew Olson...'When he is playing hot there is no stopping him. When he's on he does very well, but when he's off he plays average. He is a great senior quarterback. When a quarterback hangs in there and has nothing to lose, he cuts everything loose.'

On the UCLA v. Arizona match-up...'U of A ran the ball great. Their backs ran hard. They flat beat them and I think UCLA would agree.'

On defense making big plays...'People tend to focus on what we're not doing a great job on. Our defense is doing a great job at forcing turnovers. I think we are plus seven in the year on turnovers. Normally when we force turnover we convert the turnovers into points. We play hard in the red-zone. In all these games that are close our defense really steps up and keeps us in the game.'
