UCLA Women Earn No. 1 Regional Seed in NCAA Tournament
Nov. 7, 2005
LOS ANGELES - The Pac-10 champion UCLA women's soccer team (17-1-2) earned a No. 1 regional seed (No. 3 overall) in the NCAA Women's Soccer Championships, which begins this week at college campuses throughout the country. The Bruins will host Mississippi Valley State, UC Riverside and Colorado in first and second round action this Friday and Sunday at UCLA's Drake Stadium.
UCLA, which received an automatic bid to the tournament as a result of clinching this year's Pac-10 title, will face Mississippi Valley State (10-7-2) in the first round on Friday at 5:00 p.m. The second first-round match that day will feature UC Riverside (11-4-5) taking on Colorado (12-7-3) at 7:30 p.m.
Friday's winners will meet in the second round on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
'We greatly appreciate our seeding,' said UCLA head coach Jillian Ellis, who has led three Bruin teams to the NCAA College Cup (2000, 2003 and 2004). 'We tried to play a competitive schedule throughout the year and I feel like the NCAA Tournament Committee recognized that. We're also extremely excited to be able to stay at home and face a team we've never played before. The Committee did a good job of mixing things up in that respect and our players can't wait for the tournament to get underway.'
UCLA, which is the only team in this year's field to have played in the last two College Cups, has never faced Mississippi Valley State or UC Riverside. The Bruins and Buffaloes met for the first time this season at the UCLA Women's Cup, with the Bruins taking a 2-0 victory.
Tickets for the first and seconds rounds are $8 for adults and $6 for youth/students.
