UCLA Runs at 2005 NCAA West Region XC Championships
Nov. 8, 2005
Eric Peterson's UCLA women and men's cross country teams on Saturday (Nov. 12) will compete at the 2005 NCAA West Region Championships, hosted by Stanford and run on the Cardinal Golf Course in Palo Alto.
The men's 10K race will start at 11 a.m. and the women's 6K event will begin at 12:15 p.m. The Region Championships (there are nine Region Championships held Saturday around the nation) determine what teams and individuals automatically qualify to the upcoming 2005 NCAA Championships on Monday, Nov. 21 at Terre Haute, IN. On Saturday at Stanford, in the women and men's races, the top two teams and the top four individuals (not on automatically qualifying teams) will advance to the National Championships. On Monday (Nov. 14), 13 at-large women and men's teams (a total of 31 women and men's teams will compete at the Nationals) will be announced, along with a limited number of at-large individuals, also advancing to the NCAA Championships.
Competing for the Bruin women will be - seniors, Sarah West and Leslie Barrie; junior Ashley Caldwell; sophomores, Claire Rethmeier and Monika Rothenburger, along with freshmen, Ciara Viehweg and Lauren Jirges.
Caldwell and Rethmeier have been the Bruins' top two runners all season. At the Pac-10 meet, held Oct. 29 at Tucson, AZ, Caldwell earned first-team All-Pac-10 honors, finishing fourth, running the 6000m course in 20:55. Rethmeier placed 24th (21:54).
At Palo Alto on Saturday, five nationally-rated teams will run, including - No. 2 Stanford, the Pac-10 Champion, No. 5 Arizona State, No. 17 Northern Arizona, No. 21 Oregon and No. 26 Washington.
At last year's West Region, the Bruin women placed sixth and went on to qualify as a team to the NCAA Championships for the fourth consecutive season. From the 2004 race, the Bruins only have two returning runners - Caldwell finished 30th (21:32) and West (71st/22:20).
