Men's Hoops Signs George Odufuwa And Christian Polk
Nov. 9, 2005
Tempe, Ariz. - The Arizona State men's basketball program has signed two student-athletes in the fall signing period, head coach Rob Evans has announced. George Odufuwa (Kimball High School/Dallas, Texas) and Christian Polk (Deer Valley High School/Glendale, Ariz.) are expected to join the Sun Devil program in the fall of 2006.
'Both George and Christian are very good on the court and are excellent students in the classroom,' notes ASU head coach Rob Evans, now in his eighth year at Arizona State. 'Christian is a tremendous player on the national level who comes from a very good high school program in our area while George is a great talent from Texas, where we have had very good success. Both of them will be impact players next year. '
Odufuwa is a 6-8, 240-pound forward who averaged 19.7 points, 10.6 rebounds and two blocks in his junior year playing for coach Royce Johnson. He earned All-District 13 (4A) and All Region II first-team honors and second-team All-Metro. He is ranked as the fourth-best power forward in Texas this year by TexasHoops.com and is ranked as the 16th-best power forward in the nation by Rivals.com.
'George is a great athlete and is improving daily,' notes Evans. 'He'll be a very good Pac-10 forward as he really runs the floor and is very versatile. He comes from a great family background that emphasizes discipline both on and off the floor and will fit in with our current group very well.'
Polk helped lead Deer Valley, coached by John Fellens, to a 30-2 record last season as he averaged 15.1 points, second on the team, 4.5 assists and 1.9 steals on a squad that had two other players sign Division-I letters of intent last fall. He posted 10 20-point games as the Skyhawks were 14-0 in the conference. He posted double digits in his final 19 games, averaging 17.5 points per game in that time. Polk has earned second-team Best in the West honors by the Long Beach Press Telegram in its November of 2005 annual rankings. His Deer Valley squad lost in overtime to Mesa Mountain View in the Class 5A semifinals. He was ranked 85th in the nation by Hoop Alliance this past summer. He also earned 5A All-Arizona second-team honors by the Arizona Republic last year, joining current Sun Devil Chad Goldstein, who was a first-team pick.
'Christian is one of the better players to come out of Arizona the past few years and comes from a great program,' notes Evans. 'He is very smart and can play both guard positions. He distributes the ball very well and is a coach on the floor. He pushes the ball and defensively has the ability to be a tremendous player.'
He earned MVP honors of the Reebok/Arizona Preps Fall Showcase held at Grand Canyon University in October , a seven-year event with more than 200 players this past fall.
Polk will join a list of Arizona prep products who have played for Rob Evans, including current Sun Devils Bryson Krueger (Mountain Pointe High School) and Goldstein (Desert Mountain), Greenway's Chad Prewitt (1998-2002), Corona del Sol's Donnell Knight (1999-2003), Phoenix North High School's Tommy Smith (1999-2003) and Mesa Mountain View's Kenny Crandall (1998-99, 2001-2004). Crandall earned his B.I.S. in business and communications in 2004 while Prewitt earned his B.I.S. in business and communications in 2002. Both Knight and Smith have both played professionally since leading ASU to the NCAA Tournament in 2003, its first appearance since 1995.
After playing the University of Alberta on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. in its final exhibition game, ASU opens its regular season Wednesday, Nov. 23, at 7 p.m. at Ned Wulk Court against Southern Utah. It will play its first four games in an eight-day span, with games against Southern Utah, Alcorn State (Sat., Nov. 26 at noon), Cal-Santa Barbara (Mon., Nov. 28 at 7:30 p.m. on Fox Sports Net Arizona) and North Texas (Wed., Nov. 30 at 7 p.m.). ASU then hosts 2005 NCAA Tournament participant Minnesota, 21-11 last year, on Dec. 5 at 8:30 p.m. on Fox Sports Net.
