Mellouli Wins Three Times In Loss To Texas
Nov. 11, 2005
The No. 8 USC men's swimming and diving team, led by three wins by senior Ous Mellouli and two wins each by junior Sam Masson and sophomore Viktor Bodrogi, were edged by No. 6 Texas, 157-143, in the Trojans' dual-meet season opener on Friday (Nov. 11) at the McDonald's Swim Stadium.
Mellouli posted wins in the 1000y free (9:01.83), 500y free (4:23.00) and the 400y IM (3:57.11), Bodrogi won the 100y (48.71) and 200y back (1:44.96) and Masson won the 100y (48.95) and 200y fly (1:49.72).
Texas winners included Matthew McGinnis in the 100y (44.06) and 200y free (1:36.86), Christian Schurr in the 100y (55.55) and 200y breast (2:02.05) and diver Gao Bailey in the 1-meter (316.75) and 3-meter (361.90) springboard.
Mellouli held off Texas' top distance swimmer, Michael Kluch, in the 1000y free, taking the lead and pulling away over the final 150 yards. Mellouli did the same to Kluch in the 500y free, turning a close race into a runaway down the stretch.
In the 400y IM, Mellouli had to hold off freshman teammate Vanni Mangoni, the first-year Italian Trojan touching in 3:57.39, 0.26 behind his Tunisian teammate.
Bodrogi's backstroke wins were equally exciting, the Hungarian winning the 100-yard race by 0.25 over Caleb McDermott and the 200-yard version by 0.39 over McDermott.
Junior Kenny Jenkins took second in both springboard events.
The teams will compete again on Saturday (Nov. 12) at 10 a.m.
