Women's Golf Upsets Tennessee On First Day Of Match Play

Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. - The first day of competition at the at the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship at Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. got under way today.
The Stanford women's team opened with an upset seventh-seeded Tennessee, 3-2-0, and drew second-seeded Purdue, a 3-2-0 winner against Oklahoma State. Second round play was suspended due to darkness. Play will resume at 8 a.m. with the third round scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
Jennifer Tangtiphaiboontana, Stanford, defeated Violeta Retamoza, UT , 1-up while Marci Turner, UT, defeated Lauren Todd, Stanford, 1-up. Kelly Husted, Stanford, defeated Golda Johansson, UT, 4 and 2. Holly Cantwell, UT, defeated Stephanie Lue, Stanford, 3 and 1. Cardinal Mari Chun defeated Nicole Smith, UT, 4 and 3.
Match play between No. 2 Purdue and No. 10 Stanford will continue tomorrow. So far in the match play Purdue's Onnarin Sattayabanphot leads Stanford's Jennifer Tangtiphaiboontana, dormie 4. Myrte Eikenaar, Purdue, leads Lauren Todd, Stanford, 2-up thru 14. Kelly Husted leads Christel Boeljon, Purdue, 3-up thru 14. Whitney Frykman, Purdue, leads Ki Shui Liao, Stanford, 3-up thru 14. Maria Hernandez, Purdue, leads Mari Chun, Stanford, 2-up thru 14.
No women's teams were eliminated before suspension of play, but five individual matches finished.
