Arianna Lambie's Victory Helps Lead Stanford To Victory At NCAA West Regionals

Nov. 12, 2005

Tucson, Az - The nationally-ranked Stanford men's and women's cross country teams are heading to the NCAA Championships.

Stanford sophomore Arianna Lambie won the NCAA West Regional individual crown on Saturday on the Stanford University Golf Course in a time of 19:29.3, more than 19 seconds better than runnerup Amy Hastings of Arizona State. Lambie's victory helped the second-ranked Stanford women's team to its seventh straight regional crown and a berth at the NCAA Championships on Nov. 21 in Terre Haute, In. The Cardinal tallied 24 points compared to 48 points for runnerup Arizona State. The top two teams in each regional race (men & women, nine regional sites), and the top four individuals not on a qualifying team automatically advance to the NCAA Championships. Five Cardinal runners finished in the Top 10. Besides Lambie's victory, Stanford was paced by Teresa McWalters who finished fourth (20:16.8), Katy Trotter was fifth (20:17.1), Lindsay Flacks finished sixth (20:17.3) and Amanda Trotter was eighth (20:26.4).

Only two weeks ago, Lambie scored a victory to lead Stanford to its tenth straight Pac-10 title.

The Arizona men's team, ranked ninth in the nation, broke Stanford's ten-year hold on the NCAA West Regional title, with a victory over the fourth-ranked Cardinal on Saturday. Robert Cheseret led four Arizona runners in the Top 10 with a victory over 10,000 meters (30:03.3). Arizona tallied 33 points compared to 80 for runnerup Stanford. The Cardinal was paced by Neftalem Araia who finished eighth in a time of 30:23.5.
