Crews Top Two Races at Husky Hosted Regatta

Nov. 13, 2005

SEATTLE - Cougar rowing finished its fall season with a splash at the Head of the Lake Regatta, Nov. 13. Washington State crews finished first in two of the four races they entered, and placed second in a third.

'It's a fabulous day for Cougar rowing,' head coach Jane LaRiviere said.

The varsity eight boat highlighted the day, winning the main women's event at the regatta with a time of 16:31.178. The crew defeated four Pac-10 schools and six other teams in a close race.

'We had a great race,' LaRiviere said, 'but in reality, the top six spots were within eight seconds of each other. It was so close, so tight with the Pac-10 (schools). It lived up to my expectations.'

The third varsity eight boat 'A' also posted a winning time of 17:39.907, besting second place Gonzaga by nearly 10 seconds. The third varsity eight 'B' finished the same race in fifth place, clocking in at 18:13.959.

The second varsity eight boat finished runner up in its race with a time of 16:53.284, four seconds behind race winner Washington.

The varsity four boat placed fourth in its race with a time of 19:16.394. Yale championed the varsity four race at 18:31.786, 15 seconds ahead of second place Washington.

The results are the best WSU has achieved at the Head of the Lake Regatta, where Cougars have competed since 1990. Previously, the top finish for the varsity eight crew was second in 2002 and the only race WSU had ever won was a second varsity eight in 1994.
