FSN Arizona to Telecast Game as a Tribute to Shawntinice Polk
Nov. 14, 2005
TUCSON, Ariz. -- FSN Arizona has announced it will televise the Utah at Arizona women's basketball game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26. With the game as its centerpiece, the network also plans to use the telecast as a special tribute to the memory of Shawntinice Polk, the Arizona women's basketball player who tragically passed away at the age of 22 on Sept. 26.
Known to all as 'Polkey,' the three-time honorable mention All-American will be remembered throughout the game's telecast with pre-produced vignettes done with her teammates, coaches and university personnel. The telecast will also serve as a platform to inform viewers on what they can do to contribute to the Shawntinice S. Polk Endowment Fund, which was set up in her memory by the UA's athletic department.
FSN Arizona is also doing its part to donate to the fund through a pair of initiatives that surround the game with Utah. First, the network has purchased 2,000 of the 'Polkey #00' wristbands that will be given out to the first 2,000 fans that attend the game at McKale Center. The red, white and blue wristbands were created by the UA to memorialize Polk, with all proceeds generated by the sale of the $2 wristbands going towards the endowment fund named in her honor.
Secondly, FSN Arizona will match the ticket revenue generated for this game and will donate a matching gift of up to $5,000 to the endowment fund, as well. To purchase tickets to the game, fans can call 1-800-452-2287 or log onto www.arizonaathletics.com.
'We are pleased that FSN Arizona has decided to pick up this game in an effort to raise awareness of the Shawntinice S. Polk endowment,' Arizona Director of Athletics Jim Livengood said. 'We're really hoping this broadcast will reach viewers that may not know about the fund and the stories about Polkey will inspire people to donate to this wonderful cause. This is just another example of how our long partnership with FSN Arizona has proven to be beneficial in several ways.'
The Shawntinice S. Polk Endowment Fund was established to honor her impact on women's basketball at the University of Arizona and will be used for a scholarship that is awarded annually to a UA student-athlete. For more information, visit the endowment fund's website (http://www.arizonaathletics.com) or call 520-621-9366.
The game can be seen in the 1.8 million homes in Arizona and New Mexico that receive FSN Arizona and can also be viewed nationally in households that get FSN Arizona with the requisite home satellite packages. Dave Sitton will do the play-by-play, Bob Elliott is the analyst and Sean Mooney reports from the sidelines.
