UCLA's Nellie Spicer Named Pac-10 Volleyball Player of the Week
Nov. 14, 2005
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA setter Nellie Spicer has been named Pac-10 Volleyball Player of the Week for Nov. 8- 13, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Spicer, a freshman from Barrington, Ill., steered UCLA's offense to a five-game road win at Pepperdine, a sweep of Washington State, and a five-game win over previously undefeated Pac-10 leader and then No. 2 Washington. She tied her career-high with seven kills at Pepperdine on Tuesday and also set career-highs with seven blocks and 12 points. In the Bruins' upset over the Huskies, Spicer dished out a career-high 71 assists, the first 70+ assist performance by a UCLA setter since Krystal McFarland had a 76-assist performance in a five-game loss to Hawai'i on Sept. 11, 2004. McFarland and Spicer's 70+ assist performances are the only such performances in UCLA history since the start of rally scoring in 2001.
Spicer enters this week averaging 1.18 assist per-game better than her season average at this time last week. She is fourth in the Conference in assists, averaging 12.53 per game.
No. 16 UCLA (16-8, 8-6) will travel to the Arizona schools this weekend, facing Arizona State on Fri., Nov. 18 and No. 6 Arizona on Sat., Nov. 19.
This is Spicer's first weekly honor and UCLA's 48th Player of the Week honor all-time.
