Nov. 16, 2005
PULLMAN, Wash. - Shawna Keller and Michaela Ahlin have each signed a National Letter of Intent to swim at Washington State, head coach Erica Quam announced Wednesday. Keller comes to WSU from Cambridge, Ontario, Canada while Ahlin hails from Tyreso, Sweden.
Keller is a national level swimmer with the Cambridge Aquajets and qualified for the 2005 Senior Nationals in the 50, 100, 200m breaststrokes and 50m freestyle. Keller ranked third in the 50m breaststroke, sixth in the 100m breaststroke and 11th in the 200m breaststroke in Canada last season and competed in the Canadian World Championship Trials. She holds the Aquajets club record in the 50 freestyle and was named Member of the Year in 2004-05.
'Shawna will make a great addition to our team,' Quam said. 'She has a lot of talent and will be able to develop in our program by gaining strength and racing experience. She trains hard and has set high goals for herself, both in the pool and in the classroom. She believes the sky is the limit and I believe that she has the discipline and the right attitude to back this up. I am looking forward to see how she develops here at WSU.'
Ahlin swims with the Nykopings Swimming Gymnasium and recently won the 100 and 200m butterfly while placing second in the 50 butterfly at the 2005 Regional Junior Championships in Stockholm. In 2004, Ahlin earned the bronze in the 200m butterfly at the Short Course Junior Championships and posted a sixth place finish in the 100m butterfly at the Swedish Long Course Championships.
'Michaela brings versatility and great racing experience with her to Washington State,' Quam continued. 'She has established herself as one of the top flyers in Sweden and will fill a key role swimming butterfly on our team as well as adding speed and depth to our freestyle relays. Michaela has improved her times over the last few years and is focused both in the pool and in the classroom. Our team is excited to have her at WSU.'
