Stanford Aims For NCAA Titles

Terre Haute, In - The nationally-ranked Stanford women's and men's cross country teams are among 62 teams that will be competing for the national titles at the 2005 NCAA Cross Country Championships on Monday, November 21, at the LeVern Gibson Championship Course located at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center. The men's race will begin at 9 a.m. (pt) followed by the women's race at 10:15 a.m. (pt). Indiana State University is the host school.

Thirty-one women's teams, and 31 men's teams were selected to participate in each championship. The top two, seven-person teams automatically qualified from each of the nine regions, for a total of 18 teams. Thirteen additional teams were selected at-large. Thirty-eight individuals, the first four athletes from each region who are not a part of a qualifying team and two additonal qualifiers, were selected to participate in each championship. All individual qualifiers must have finished in the Top 25 of their region.

The Cardinal women, ranked second in the nation, captured the NCAA West Regional on Nov. 12 at the Stanford Golf Course. Stanford totaled 24 points compared to 48 for runnerup Arizona State. Stanford sophomore Arianna Lambie captured the NCAA West Regional individual title. The other automatic qualifying teams, besides Stanford, are Arizona State, Arkansas, Baylor, Boston College, Brigham Young, Colorado, Columbia-Barnard, Duke, Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, Princeton, Tennessee and Villanova. The women's at-large teams were Butler, William & Mary, Georgetown, Illinois, Marquette, Michigan State, Northern Arizona, North Carolina, Providence, Rice, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wake Forest.

The Stanford men's team, ranked fourth in the country, qualified automatically for the NCAA's with a second place finish at the NCAA West Regionals at Stanford. The Cardinal finished with 80 points compared to Regional champion Arizona with 33. The other automatic qualifying teams, besides Stanford and Arizona, were Alabama, American, Arkansas, Colorado, Dartmouth, Florida State, Georgetown, Iona, Iowa, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, Texas, UTEP, Virginia, William & Mary, and Wisconsin. The men's at-large teams were Arizona State, Brigham Young, Butler, Eastern Michigan, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Loyola (Illinois), Minnesota, Ohio State, Portland, Tennessee and Washington.

Stanford will send eight men (Neftalem Araia, Jacob Gomez, Brett Gotcher, Garrett Heath, John McGuire, Hari Mix, Jonathan Pierce, David Vidal) and eight women (Lauren Centrowitz, Lindsay Flacks, Alicia Follmar, Katie Harrington, Arianna Lambie, Teresa McWalters, Amanda Trotter, Katy Trotter) to the NCAA Championships.

Team Toppings
The Cardinal women are ranked second in the nation and have certainly enjoyed another excellent season ... In six races, the Cardinal has been crowned champion six times, including victories at the NCAA West Regional (11/12/05) and the Pac-10 Championship (10/29/05) ... The Cardinal men have also fared well with four victories in six races, including the Pac-10 Championship (10/29/05) and the Pre-NCAA's (10/15/05) in Terre Haute, In.

National Notes
Both the Stanford men's and women's teams have been yearly contenders at the NCAA Cross Country Championships ... Since 1996, the Cardinal men have won four NCAA titles (1996, 1997, 2002, 2003) and have finished no lower than sixth in the last nine seasons ... The Cardinal women have won two NCAA titles (1996, 2003) in the last nine years, and have finished no lower than fifth during that span ... Since 1996, 17 men's runners have been accorded All-American honors a total of 37 times while 14 Stanford women's runners have won a total of 26 All-American honors.

Has collected four Top 10 finishes in five races this year ... Helped lead Stanford to the Pac-10 title (10/29/05) with a seventh place finish ... Best finish was fourth at the Murray Keatinge Invitational (10/1/05).

The only true senior on this year's Cardinal squad ... Has competed in four races with a best finish of second place at the Murray Keatinge Invitational (10/1/05).
