Puhakka Breaks ASU School Record In One-Meter Diving

TEMPE, Ariz. (www.thesundevils.com) -- Arizona State University diver Joona Puhakka (Helsinki, Finland) shattered his own school record for the one-meter dive, but ASU was unable to prevail over USC. No. 10 Women of Troy defeated the ASU women 177-121 while ASU's men fell to No. 8 USC 173-125 at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center Saturday.
With a score of 438.00, Puhakka recorded the highest score in one-meter diving in ASU history breaking his previous school record of 403.58 set last season. Puhakka also won the three-meter diving event with a score of 442.35, just seven off of his school record.
On the women's side, senior Kathryn Hennessy (Kansas City, Mo.), sophomore Caitlin Andrew (San Antonio, Texas) and sophomore Sarah Fischer (Boulder, Colo.) all won events for the Sun Devils. Andrew captured titles in two events including the 200-yard backstroke and the 100-yard butterfly. Hennessy recorded a winning time of 10:06.85 in the 1,000-yard freestyle and Fischer recorded a 4:57.10 time in winning the 500-yard freestyle. Andrew also finished second in the 100-yard backstroke.
Sophomore C.J. Nuess (Medical Lake, Wash.), junior Richie Crowder (Los Gatos, Calif.) and junior Leo Martins (Garanhuns-PE, Brazil) won events for the ASU men's team. Nuess captured the title in the 1,000-yard freestyle event with a time of 9:17.52. He also took second-place in the 400-yard IM. Crowder recorded a time of 20.54 to win the 50-yard freestyle. Martins won the men's 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:02.96.
Sun Devil swimming will travel to Austin, Texas, Dec. 1-3 for the Texas Invitational while diving heads to Columbus, Ohio, to compete in the Buckeye Diving Invitational.
