Trio of Cardinal Place at the Cal Open
Nov. 19, 2005
Fullerton, Calif. - Every wrestler competing for Stanford earned at least one victory, as Tanner Gardner, Scott Loescher and Ray Blake all placed at the California Open on Saturday. The Cardinal posted 28 wins across 12 wrestlers. Stanford's unattached wrestlers added another three victories.
'Our guys fought hard,' noted head coach Kerry McCoy after the tournament. 'We have errors that we can concentrate on and things we can work on. It was good for us to see a lot of our Pac-10 competition, and next time, we'll be ready for them.'
At 125 pounds, Gardner finished in second place, posting three straight wins to open the tournament before dropping a one point decision to 12th-ranked Chad Mendes of Cal Poly in the finals. Loescher took third place at 157 pounds, winning six matches, including four-straight in the consolation bracket to claim third.
At 165 pounds, Blake captured seventh place, but had to defeat teammate Brian Perry in order to advance. Blake and Perry both finished the day with three wins.
Stanford (0-1) will be back in the Bay Area this week, competing at San Francisco State on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
