Box Score

BYU senior forward Ambrosia Anderson scored 26 points to power the Cougars past UCLA, 71-67, tonight in Pauley Pavilion. UCLA senior guard Nikki Blue paced four Bruins in double digits with 19 points. A 52-27 rebounding advantage helped the visiting Cougars hold off the Bruins down the stretch in a game which featured 11 lead changes and saw neither team lead by more than nine points.

Anderson, who scored 15 in the first half, hit two three-point shots and added a free throw during a key stretch of the second half to held improve BYU's record to 2-0 this season. UCLA fell to 0-2 with the loss in its home opener despite forcing 26 Cougar turnovers.

After a Nikki Blue basket had cut the Cougar lead to 61-59 at the 6:17 mark of the second half, Anderson scored the next seven points for the Cougars who enjoyed a 68-61 lead after her second made three-point shot which came with 4:07 remaining on the clock. Another basket by Blue sliced the margin to 68-63 with 3:17 to play. Neither team then scored until BYU center Lauren Riley's lay up at 1:57 gave the Cougars a 70-63 advantage. Blue then hit a pair of free throws with 1:14 to play and Noelle Quinn put back a Lindsey Pluimer miss with 52 seconds to play to narrow the BYU lead to 70-67.

UCLA freshman guard Tierra Henderson then drew a charging foul from Anderson with 47 seconds to play. However, UCLA's Ortal Oren failed to connect on a three-point attempt from the left side with 37 seconds remaining and BYU grabbed the rebound. UCLA guard Lisa Willis then stole the ball from the Cougars with 23 seconds to play, but missed two straight three-point shot attempts. The second of Willis' attempts to tie the game at 70 came with just seven seconds on the clock. BYU was fouled after gaining possession of the rebound and Riley converted one of her two free throw attempts for the final points in the game with 4.6 seconds to play.

The Bruins will play next on Friday against No. 11-ranked Georgia in the first round of the LMU / Ayres Hotel Thanksgiving Tournament. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. in Loyola's Gersten Pavilion. Charlotte plays host LMU in the nightcap.
