Nov. 26, 2005
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Malik Hairston and Chamberlain Oguchi scored 14 points each to lead Oregon defeated Rice 84-60 Saturday afternoon.
Aaron Brooks added 13 points for the Ducks (4-0), while Bryce Taylor scored 11 and Ivan Johnson had 10 points.
Lorenzo Williams led the Owls (1-3) with a game-high 19 points, while Jamaal Moore added 12.
Oregon got its transition game going early against Rice, as the Ducks wasted little time turning the game into a rout. Sparked by 16 defensive rebounds and eight Owl turnovers in the first half, the Ducks were able to score on numerous fast-break layups and pull-up 3-pointers that sparked a pair of extended scoring runs.
A 15-2 run gave the Ducks a 15-4 lead at the 14:50 mark. Broooks, Taylor and Hairston all hit 3-pointers during that stretch, with Taylor also scoring on a layup.
After Rice cut the lead to 18-10 on a three-point play by Moore at 12:34, Oregon outscored the Owls 12-2 over the next four minutes to take a 30-12 advantage.
The Ducks, who led 42-25 at the break, put the game away with a second-half opening run of 17-4 to go up 59-29.
Hairston scored six of those points.
Oregon hit eight 3-pointers in the first half three by Oguchi - and 13-of-28 overall. The Ducks outrebounded Rice 44-31 for the game, with Maarty Luenen leading the way with 13.
