Nov. 28, 2005
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA senior guard Lisa Willis has been named the Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Nov. 22-27, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
The Long Beach, Calif., native was named the Tournament MVP at the Loyola Marymount/Ayres Hotel Thanksgiving Classic after averaging 25 points in wins over 11th-ranked Georgia (84-64) and Charlotte (87-71). Willis led all players in scoring in both games with 29 and 21 points, respectively.
Her 12 field goals made against Georgia tied her career-high, and her 29 points were just two off her career-high. Her seven points during a 21-7 run at the end of the first half against the Lady Bulldogs helped UCLA turn a close 25-23 game into a 46-30 halftime lead.
Willis' 63 points on the year move her into a tie for 15th on UCLA's all-time scoring list with 1192 career points. She needs only eight points to become just the 15th Bruin player to score 1200 points in her career. Willis currently tops the UCLA records in three-point shots with 186 and her 102 steals last season were the most ever by a Bruin junior and third-most in Bruin history.
UCLA (2-2), takes on UC Irvine at home on Wednesday before playing two road games at Clemson and Oklahoma.
This is Willis' first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and UCLA's 33rd weekly honor all-time.
