NEWS AND NOTES

  • With a 3-2 double overtime win over Wake Forest on Sat., Nov. 26 at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley, Calif., the seventh-seeded CALIFORNIA men's soccer team propelled itself into the NCAA Elite Eight for the first time in program history ... The Bears will face No. 2 seed New Mexico (16-1-3) on Fri., Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. at the UNM Soccer Complex in Albuquerque ... It marks the first-ever round of eight appearance for the Lobos, as well.

  • Down 2-1, with only seconds left in regulation, Pac-10 Player of the Year, senior forward Calen Carr scored his second goal of the afternoon off an assist from sophomore midfielder Luke Sassano, tying the game with just 22 seconds remaining in the match ... Sophomore defender Jeff Serafini scored the game-winning goal with just 1:30 left in the second overtime period to lift the Bears to the 3-2 win.

  • The Bears also took their first match of postseason play down to the wire, advancing past Santa Clara on Tues., Nov. 22 in the second round of NCAA action, defeating the Broncos, 5-4, on penalty kicks.

  • Pac-10 semifinalists for the MAC Hermann Trophy, college soccer's version of the Heisman Trophy, have been announced and include, UCLA junior midfielder Patrick Ianni and teammate, sophomore defender Marvell Wynne ... UCLA was just one of two schools to have multiple nominees ... The finalists will be determined in voting by NSCAA Division I member coaches and will be announced at the College Cup on Fri., Dec. 9 ... Those three players will attend the trophy presentation in January.

    TEAM NOTES

  • CALIFORNIA Golden Bears (6-3-1, 14-3-3)
    California trailed 2-1 with just seconds left in regulation, but Pac-10 Player of the Year, senior forward Calen Carr came to the rescue, scoring the Bears' equalizer with just 22 seconds remaining ... The goal, off the assist from sophomore midfielder Luke Sassano was Carr's second of the afternoon as he first put the team on the scoreboard with a goal in the 48th minute off the assist from junior midfielder Andrew Jacobson ... After the first scoreless overtime period, it looked as if the team might be attempting penalty kicks for the second straight match, but sophomore defender Jeff Serafini scored the game-winning goal with just 1:30 left on the clock, to give Cal the 3-2 win ... It was just Serafini's second career goal ... Said Serafini on the goal, 'At that point everybody is trying to go up and get the goal or a touch. It's every man for himself in the box' ... The Bears outshot the Demon Deacons 30-16, with 20 of those being shots on goal ... With the win, the Bears improve to 14-3-3 on the year and advance to the NCAA Elite Eight for the first time in program history ...
