Cal Third on Day 1 of Texas Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas - Third-ranked California opened the first night of finals at the Texas Invitational by taking second place in the 200-yard freestyle relay and ended the night in third place. The Golden Bears, who also got a fifth-place finish from Javier Rivas in three-meter diving, have 174 points and trail first-place Arizona (268 points) and host Texas (224).
The Cal A squad of senior Milorad Cavic, sophomore William Copeland, sophomore Joe Whittington and Jonas Tilly swam the 200 free relay in an NCAA consideration qualifying time of 1:19.19 and finished as the runner-up behind the Arizona A team (1:18.56). In the next event, Cal sophomore Jernej Godec took eighth place (48.74) and Cavic was second (48.92) in the consolation final of the 100-yard butterfly.
Junior Daniel Lysaught notched another eighth-place finish (4:27.62) for Cal in the 500 freestyle, and the Lentz brothers - junior Graham (1:52.10) and freshman Ian (1:53.14) - had the Bears' top finishes (13th and 15th, respectively) in the 200 individual medley.
Cal had five swimmers in the consolation final of the 50 free, and they finished 12-16. Tilly (12th in 20.21) and Copeland (13th in 20.28) swam NCAA consideration qualifying times to lead the Bears' contingent.
Former Bears Rolandas Gimbutis and Bart Kizierowski, swimming for the Cal Aquatics club, finished fourth (19.95) and fifth (20.00), respectively, in the 50 free. Kizierowski is also Cal's current volunteer assistant coach.
Rivas followed with his fifth-place finish on the three-meter springboard. The sophomore scored a 294.35 after scoring a 265.85 in this morning's prelim.
The second day of the Texas Invitational begins tomorrow at 10 a.m. CT at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Tomorrow's finals begin at 6 p.m. CT.
