Two Cardinal Wrestlers Advance to Second Day at Las Vegas Invitational

Las Vegas, Nev. - Stanford sophomore Tanner Gardner led the way for the Cardinal today at the 2005 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational at the Cashman Center, posting four wins en route to a berth in the semifinals. Seven of the Cardinal's 10 entrants picked up at least one victory, with Gardner and Scott Loescher each recording four wins today.

Gardner, the 11th-ranked wrestler in the country at 125 pounds and the third-seeded competitor at the tournament, notched a perfect 4-0 mark today. His day began with a technical fall in the first round and ended with a pin in the quarterfinals. He will face Arizona State's Jeremy Mendoza tomorrow morning in the semifinals.

At 157 pounds Loescher suffered a first-round loss against eighth-ranked Craig Henning of Wisconsin, but kept going in the wrestle-back bracket, picking up four victories, including a pin and a pair of decisions. Loescher will face Hofstra's James Strouse in the wrestle-backs tomorrow.

Sophomore Josh Zupancic posted a 2-0 record to earn a spot in the Round of 16 at 149 pounds, before leaving the tournament by default. At 165 pounds, senior Ray Blake won three matches, including an opening-round major decision and a pin in the consolation bracket before falling out of the tournament in his fifth match of the day. Redshirt freshman Luke Feist also picked up a pair of victories, while true freshman Tyler Parker and senior Ryan Hagen both scored one win apiece.

The second day of competition in Las Vegas will commence with consolation action at 9 a.m., followed by the main draw semifinals at 10 a.m. Fifth and seventh-place matches will be begin at 12:30 p.m., while the championships and third place matches are slated to start at 5 p.m.
