Washington Swimming Wins Husky Invite

Dec. 4, 2005

FEDERAL WAY- The Washington men's and women's swim teams joined forces to win the Husky Invitational on Sunday in commanding fashion. The Huskies tallied 2263 points to take first place in the four-day event, more than doubling the University of Calgary Varsity team, who took second with a total of 716.5 points.

For the women it was Brittany Epperson who lead the way, tallying a total of three first-place finishes. Epperson took first in the 25 freestyle with a time of 10.86 and in the 100 freestyle with an NCAA B-cut qualifying time of 50.70. Her time in the 100 free was also good enough to be the fastest time of the season for the Huskies. Epperson's 400 freestyle relay team (Kimberly Jasmer, Epperson, Caitlyn Shortt and Sharon Olson) finished first with a time of 3:26.33 to earn the Huskies 40 points.

Other strong performances for Washington included a first-place finish for senior co-captain Sharon Olson in the 1650 freestyle with an NCAA B-cut qualifying time of 16:46.28 and Jessica Buchanan in the 200 breaststroke with the third-fastest time in school history (2:15.03).

The men were lead by their 400 medley relay teams finishing in the top-two spots of the event. Ivan Perhat, Bret Lundgaard, Niko Micin and Bruno Barbic took first with a season-best time of 3:02.84. Taking second in the event was a team consisting of Henry Hudson, Jared Osborne, Anthony Falaniko and Brenton Dowdy (3:05.31).

Barbic also had a first place finish in the 100 freestyle with a season-best time of 44.82. Perhat took second in the event with a time of 45.26.

Pat Penoyer earned a first-place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a season-best time of 2:02.61.

Both the men's and women's teams won't compete again until December 22 when they face Indian River CC in Orlando, Florida.
