Cal Selected for ITA National Team Indoor Championships
Dec. 6, 2005
BERKELEY - The California women's tennis team has been selected for the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships, which will be hosted by the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wis., on Feb. 2-5, 2006 at the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
Cal was one of only 16 teams selected to compete in the tournament. Other teams include: Stanford, Texas, Kentucky, Northwestern, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, Georgia, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Miami, Baylor, Duke, TCU, Harvard, and BYU.
'Last year we were very young but dynamic team who knocked off two top 10 teams during the year,' said head coach Jan Brogan. 'The parody is intense in women's tennis right now, so this selection provides us with the opportunity to play many teams we won't see during the season and to test our players against top national caliber teams early. We have great depth and quality within our squad with everything to gain from the experience.'
Cal has made 11 appearances and holds a 19-17 overall record at the ITA National Team Indoors. Cal's best showing was in 2000, when the Bears made it to the finals. Last year Cal advanced to the semifinals.
Each team is guaranteed three matches, which will take place Feb. 2-4, with one match being played per day. Only the two finalists will play on Sunday Feb. 5.
