Four Cal Players Named to the NSCAA Far West All-Region Teams

Dec. 8, 2005

BERKELEY - California's Calen Carr, Tyson Wahl, Eric Kronberg and Steve Purdy were named to the NSCAA/adidas 2005 Far West All-Region Teams.

'With the historic season that Cal had, it is only fitting that these four players received national recognition,' said head coach Kevin Grimes. 'This is the first time that Cal has ever had this many players receive All-Far West honors. All four had tremendous seasons and were a major factor in us getting to the Elite Eight.'

Senior forward Calen Carr, the 2005 Pac-10 Player of the Year, was named to the NSCAA Far West first team, which marks his first honor. Carr helped lead the Bears to the Elite Eight for the first time in school history after scoring the game-tying goal in the second round of the NCAA Tournament against Wake Forest. Carr tied the game 2-2 with 22 seconds remaining on the clock, to send the game into overtime in Cal's eventual 3-2 victory.Carr finished the season leading the Pac-10 in seven categories, including goals (13) and game-winning goals (6).

Senior defender Tyson Wahl was also named to the NSCAA Far West first team, which marked his first such honor. Wahl, who has started every game for Cal in his career, was also named to the All-Pac-10 first team and earned Pac-10 All-Academic first-team honors. The Newport Beach, Calif., native finished the season second on the team in goals (5), two of which were game-winners.

Senior goalkeeper Eric Kronberg was named to the NSCAA Far West second team. Kronberg wrapped up the 2005 season recording seven shutouts while making 83 saves. He also finished second in the NCAA with a shots on goal save percentage of 0.874 and eighth in the nation with a goals-against average of 0.603. Carr, Wahl and Kronberg have all been invited to the 2006 MLS player combine, which takes place Jan. 12-15, 2006.

Also earning honors was junior defender Steve Purdy. Purdy was named to the NSCAA Far West third team. The San Jose native recorded one goal and two assists for the 2005 season and was a key element to Cal's back four.
