California's Sarah Pool Named U.S. Bank Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Dec. 12, 2005
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - California junior guard Sarah Pool has been named the U.S. Bank Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 5-11, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
The Central Point, Ore., native posted her first career double-doubles in two California victories this weekend. In a 78-57 win over San Jose State on Thurs., Dec. 8, she recorded career highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds. Against South Carolina State two days later, Pool tallied 14 points and a career-high 11 assists in the 94-48 victory. In the Spartan game, Pool didn't miss a shot, and ended up making her first two field goals (both three-pointers) against the Bulldogs for a stretch of seven straight three-pointers.
Pool began the week averaging 3.1 ppg, 4.3 apg, and 2.4 rpg and shot only 33.3 percent from the field. With regular starter Jené Morris coming off the bench for only two minutes against San Jose State and not playing against South Carolina State, Pool answered the starting call with 18.0 ppg, 9.5 apg, 6.0 rpg and 2.5 spg. The junior also shot 90.9 percent from the floor, 87.5 percent from three-point range and 100 percent from the foul line.
A co-captain with Reneé Wright and Krista Foster, Pool earned honorable mention Pac-10 All-Academic honors in 2004-05. She also led the Bears last season with 4.2 apg, a mark that ranked fourth in the league.
California (8-2), has won four straight and will begin Conference play at Washington on Tues., Dec. 20.
This is Pool's first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and Cal's 21st weekly honor all-time. It is the first weekly award for Cal since Dec. 8, 2003.
