Two UCLA players were selected to the All-America team, and two others were named to the All-Freshman team for College Soccer News. UCLA sophomore defender Marvell Wynne (Poway, Calif.) was recognized as a first-team All-American, and junior midfielder/defender Patrick Ianni (Lodi, Calif.) received third-team All-America acclaim. Freshmen Sal Zizzo (San Diego, Calif.) and Brad Rusin (Holmes Beach, Fla.) earned first-team recognition on the All-Freshman team.
This is Wynne's second first-team All-America honor this season. He was selected to the NSCAA All-America first team and was a semifinalist for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy. He also earned first-team NSCAA Far West All-Region and All-Pac-10 honors during a season in which he helped UCLA post 14 shutouts, the second-highest total in school history. He also scored one goal and had three assists on the year.
Ianni, who was a second-team NSCAA All-American and M.A.C. Hermann Trophy semifinalist, also played a big role in the Bruins' 14 shutouts. He also contributed on the offensive front with two goals and two assists, including the game-winning goal at Washington. Ianni was a first-team All-Pac-10 honoree for the second consecutive year and earned first-team NSCAA Far West All-Region honors.
Zizzo, the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, played in all 20 of UCLA's games, making 16 starts and scoring one goal and five assists. His five assists ranked second on the team. He was named the Pac-10 Player of the Week on Sept. 6 after scoring a goal and two assists in his first collegiate start in the Bruins' 4-0 upset win over then-No. 2 Maryland.
Rusin started in 11 of his 15 games played and scored one goal, the game-winner against UC Santa Barbara. The freshman defender was also an honorable mention All-Pac-10 selection and was named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week for Oct. 24. He and Zizzo were both selected to the Top Drawer Soccer All-Rookie Team.
