Stanford Set for Reno Tournament of Champions

Dec. 16, 2005

Stanford, Calif. - Stanford wrestling will travel to Reno, Nev., this weekend for Sunday's 2005 Reno Tournament of Champions. Twenty-seven squads will be competing for the team title, including top-ranked Oklahoma State, who has won the past three Reno Championships.

'The Reno Tournament will give us an opportunity to see the No. 1 iteam in the nation, as well as seven of our Pac-10 opponents, including Oregon, who we have not seen yet this year,' noted head coach Kerry McCoy. 'The guys have had a good week of training, which was challenging considering they also had to take their finals, but I am confident that our team is ready and that we will compete well.'

Stanford has been on hiatus for final exams since the Dec. 3 and 4 Las Vegas Invitational. Sophomore Tanner Gardner, ranked No. 12 in the nation at 125 pounds, has finished in the top-four in each of the three tournaments he has competed in, with one title at the Central Missouri Open. Senior Ray Blake, the sqaud's win leader with 16 victories, will look for his fourth top finish of the season at 165 pounds. Juniors Brian Perry (165) Ian Bork (197), sophomore Scott Loescher (157) and freshman Tyler Parker (141) have each placed at one tournament this season, and will be looking for another strong finish this weekend.

Also competing for the Cardinal will be true freshman Eric Minnick (133), redshirt freshmen Bobby Pease (157), Luke Feist (174) and Jared Boyer (HWT), and fifth-year seniors Brennan Corbett (165), Ryan Hagen (184), and Larry Ozowara (197).

Competition will begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday, with the finals slated to start at 6 p.m.
