Ray Blake & Tanner Gardner Place at Reno

Dec. 18, 2005

Reno, Nev. - Stanford began strongly at the 11th Reno Tournament of Champions at the Livestock Events Center, winning eight first-round matches, but the Cardinal struggled later in the day, as all three quarterfinalists fell before reaching the semifinals. Stanford continued to battle, however, as Ray Blake picked up a fourth-place finish, while Tanner Gardner finished in fifth place and two other Cardinal wrestlers came within one bout of placing.

Blake took fourth placing at his fourth tournament of the season, and improving his record to 22-8. In his first match of the day, Blake trailed Penn State's Phillip Bomberger 6-1, but fought back with seven unanswered points to take an 8-6 victory. In the next round, Blake lost a 10-6 decision to defending Pac-10 champion and 2005 Reno Champion Joey Bracamonte of Oregon, but in the consolation bracket, he won five straight en route to the third-place match.

Sophomore Tanner Gardner went 5-2 en route to a fifth-place finish, placing at his fourth-straight tournament and improving his season record to 18-5. He posted a tech fall in his opening match and earned a decision in his second to advance to the quarterfinals. Against fifth-seeded Luke Smith of Central Michigan, Gardner dropped a tough 6-3 decision to drop into the consolation brackets. Gardner came back with a decision and a major decision, but lost a 3-1 match to seventh-ranked John Velez of Northwestern to drop into the fifth-place match. Against Penn State's Tim Haas, Gardner posted an 8-4 victory to capture fifth.

At 157 pounds, sophomore Scott Loescher tabbed two-straight wins to advance to the quarters, but lost a 9-3 decision to two-time All-American and eventual Reno champion, Brian Stith of Arizona State. In the consolation brackets, Loescher took a 6-1 lead over Tennessee-Chattanooga's Jake Yost, before Yost defaulted out with injury. Loescher then fell one match short of placing with a 4-0 loss to Oklahoma State's Newly McSpadden.

At 174 pounds, Brennan Corbett upset the third-ranked wrestler in the Pac-10 to earn a spot in the quarters, but fell in the round of eight to Central Michigan's Brandon Sinnott. In the consolations, Corbett shutout his first opponent, 6-0, but ended the day with a 7-3 loss against Penn State's James Yonushonis.

Stanford will return to the mat on Dec. 29 & 30 for the Midlands tournament in Evanston, Ill.
