Virginia Tech Clips Stanford 59-52 At The Las Vegas Showdown

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Virginia Tech's Coleman Collins had 16 points and Jamon Gordon added 12 points Saturday night as the Hokies overcame a nine-point halftime deficit to beat Stanford 59-52 in the nightcap of the Las Vegas Showdown.
UNLV beat Texas Tech 84-73 in the first half of the doubleheader.
Virginia Tech held Stanford to two points over the final 3:43 and Markus Sailes hit a 3-pointer with 23.8 seconds to play to stretch the lead to six.
Virginia Tech (8-3) opened the second half with a 13-4 run to the tie the game at 34.
There were three ties and five lead changes before the Hokies took the lead for good with 3:04 to play on a driving layup by Zabian Dowdell.
Sailes added 10 and Dowdell had nine for the Hokies, who turned the ball over only seven times.
Chris Hernandez had a game-high 17 points for Stanford (2-4), but could not convert the front end of two separate one-and-one free throw opportunities down the stretch.
Matt Haryasz added 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Cardinal.
Stanford trailed only once in the first half, falling behind 15-14 on a jumper from Virginia Tech's A.D. Vassallo with 8:59 to play.
But the Cardinal used 3-pointers from Hernandez and Tim Morris in scoring the next 13 points to take a 27-15 lead with 2:44 to play.
