Jan. 2, 2006

Kailua, Hawai'i - The No. 18 Washington gymnastics team opens its 2006 season at a six team meet in Kailua, Hawai'i on Tuesday, Jan. 3 at 8 p.m. PT. The Huskies will be competing in the Hawai'ian Classic at Kailua High School against the likes of No. 3 ranked UCLA, No. 13 Oregon State, No. 20 Arkansas, California and Sacramento State.

The Huskies finished last season 16-13 and narrowly missed capturing a berth to the 2005 NCAA Championships. Head Coach Bob Levesque's squad returns 10 letterwinners from last year and welcome in six newcomers.

Kelly McDonald (Roosevelt HS, Seattle, Wash.) is the lone senior on the squad. Junior Chelsea Bakken (Mountain View HS, Mesa, Ariz.), sophomore Natalie Gillan (Pomona HS, Denver, Colo.), and Canadian freshman Ashley Houghting (Northview Heights Secondary, Welland, Ont.) are all expected to compete in all-around for the young Huskies in the opening meet.

The Huskies will only have nine of their 12 scholarship student-athletes available as Brittney Brabec (Tommy John Surgery), Julie Medeiros (stress fracture) and Nicole Waiss (ACL surgery) are all out for the season.

Washington's next meet will be at Bank of America Arena on Friday, Jan. 13 against No. 2 Utah at 7 p.m.
